Mercedes is moving past heavy cylinders to pancake-thin disc motors
In short: While the industry focuses on bigger batteries, Mercedes-Benz is rewriting the rules of electric powertrains. This video explores how a strategic acquisition of axial-flux technology could redefine high-performance EVs by 2027.
Mercedes-Benz has acquired Yasa to secure proprietary axial-flux disc motor technology. Unlike traditional heavy radial flux cylinders, these "pancake-thin" motors use outer-perimeter magnetic leverage to generate massive torque without the deadweight. This architecture was pioneered at Oxford University by Tim Woolmer and has already been proven in hypercars like the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and Lamborghini Revuelto.
The technology enables a power density of approximately 59 kW per kilogram. Mercedes plans to integrate this into an AMG EA platform featuring a tri-motor setup capable of nearly 1,200 horsepower and 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in under two seconds. Production is slated for the Marienfelde plant in Berlin, with applications ranging from in-wheel hubs to electric flights with Rolls-Royce.
