From Scottish ministers to global media titans: the Murdoch lineage
In short: The Murdoch dynasty is often defined by its modern media empire, but its roots lie in Scottish faith and pioneering engineering. Before the headlines of News Corp, the family was building the foundations of Australian life, from the first electric stoves to the universities that bear their names.
The Murdoch family's trajectory began with two Scottish immigrants, the Reverend James Murdoch and his wife Helen, who migrated to the Colony of Victoria in 1884. While the family is now synonymous with international media, their early history is rooted in the church and academia. Serving as a minister for the Free Church of Scotland, James Murdoch was the father of Patrick, an Australian Presbyterian minister who authored numerous theological works.
The family's influence branched into diverse fields before the rise of the modern media conglomerate. David Curle Smith, a pioneering electrical engineer, was responsible for the municipal electricity supply in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and patented a pioneering electric stove in 1906. His wife, Nora Curle Smith, authored the world's first cookbook for electric stoves in 1907. At the same time, the University of Western Australia appointed Sir Walter Murdoch as its inaugural Professor of English in 1913, where he became a well-known scholar. His legacy is so deeply embedded in the region that both a university and a suburb in Perth bear his name.
The transition to media dominance was spearheaded by Sir Keith Murdoch, who became managing director of The Herald and Weekly Times Ltd in 1928. His nephew, Sir Walter, had his essays syndicated across Australia through this very group. By 1952, Rupert Murdoch inherited his father's stake in News Limited, beginning a rapid expansion that saw the acquisition of British newspapers like The Sun in 1968 and the New York Post in 1976. Today, the family's control remains a subject of active legal scrutiny, with a September 2024 court case addressing the fourth generation's share and control over the empire.
