The man who envisioned a world powered by alternating current

Nikola Tesla’s GENIUS Inventions · 12:08 · Video: Lost in Time · Watch at the source

In short: Nikola Tesla did not just invent gadgets; he reimagined how humanity consumes energy. By conceptualizing the rotating magnetic field, he laid the groundwork for the modern electrical grid. From radio technology to early motors, his work bridged the gap between imaginative theory and the practical infrastructure of the modern world.

Nikola Tesla, a Serbian-American inventor born in 1856, is perhaps most famous for his role in the 'War of Currents.' While working in Paris and Budapest during the early 1880s, Tesla visualized the principle of the rotating magnetic field. This breakthrough allowed him to develop the three-phase system of electric power transmission and the induction motor. These technologies became the backbone of alternating-current (AC) power systems, which eventually triumphed over Thomas Edison’s direct-current (DC) systems because they could be transmitted more efficiently over long distances.

Tesla's career was marked by high-stakes commercial and scientific ventures. In 1884, he immigrated to the United States with very little money and eventually sold the patent rights for his AC dynamos, transformers, and motors to George Westinghouse. This partnership was pivotal in establishing the modern electrical standard. Beyond power grids, Tesla's laboratory was a hub for diverse experimentation.

The Tesla coil, a component still vital for modern radio, was created by him during 1891. He also explored early forms of imaging, experimenting with shadowgraphs that preceded the discovery of X-rays in 1895. Despite his massive contributions, Tesla's legacy is often complicated by his more speculative projects. Historical records and research highlight his work on the Wardenclyffe tower, the first public demonstration of a radio-controlled boat, and his pursuit of a 'death ray.' While some of these projects were more visionary than commercially viable, they illustrate a mind that sought to master the fundamental forces of nature. His transition from a student at the Technical University at Graz to a global icon of innovation reflects a journey from poetic imagination to revolutionary engineering.
