A smart glove and AI allow for real-time sign language to text translation
In short: Researchers have developed a system that enables bidirectional communication between signers and non-signers by translating sign language into text and audio in real time. By combining a triboelectric smart glove with a deep learning model, the team created a way to recognize not just individual gestures, but full sentences within a virtual reality environment.
The system addresses a major limitation in current technology, which often struggles to recognize complex sentences rather than just isolated words. The researchers tested a deep learning model using both segmentation and non-segmentation approaches to identify 50 words and 20 sentences.
The study demonstrated that the model could recognize entirely new sentences formed by recombining known words with an average accuracy of 86.67%. While the system shows promise for remote communication, the study primarily focuses on the technical feasibility of the recognition model and the hardware integration.
Why it matters: This technology could significantly lower communication barriers for the hearing and speech impaired by enabling real-time translation of sign language.
