Adding iron to cobalt catalysts significantly boosts oxygen production efficiency
In short: Researchers studying cobalt-based electrocatalysts found that incorporating iron can increase the intrinsic activity of the oxygen evolution reaction by roughly 100-fold. By examining various cobalt-iron (oxy)hydroxide compositions, the study demonstrated that iron-rich structures perform much more efficiently than pure cobalt versions.
The study used in situ electrical measurements and microbalance tests to observe how different iron concentrations affect conductivity and stability. While iron enhances activity, the researchers found that high iron content can lead to film dissolution, and lower iron levels may cause the catalyst to transform into less active phases over time.
Why it matters: Finding the right balance of iron and cobalt is essential to maximize catalytic speed without destroying the material.
