Global green hydrogen projects face a significant gap between ambition and reality
In short: Researchers tracking the global energy transition found that while the ambition for green hydrogen is growing rapidly, the actual delivery of these projects is lagging. By monitoring 190 projects over three years, the study revealed that only 7% of global capacity announcements in 2023 were completed on schedule.
The study highlights a disconnect: the announced project pipeline has nearly tripled in three years to 422 GW, moving closer to 1.5 °C climate goals. However, the researchers estimate that realizing these projects without carbon pricing would require up to $1.3 trillion in global subsidies, which far exceeds currently announced funding.
The analysis identifies a persistent implementation gap based on historical and future data. A limitation of the study is that it relies on tracking announced projects and estimates, which may not account for all variables in project completion or future policy shifts.
Why it matters: The massive scale of green hydrogen goals may outpace current funding and construction capabilities, potentially leading to long-term supply shortages.
