New architecture combines the efficiency of convolutions with the power of transformers
In short: Researchers have developed ConViT, a new vision transformer architecture that blends the strengths of two dominant AI models. While standard convolutional networks are efficient at recognizing local patterns and transformers excel at understanding global context, they often require massive amounts of data to perform well. ConViT uses a gated positional self-attention mechanism to achieve high performance with significantly less training data.
The study introduces a 'soft' convolutional bias by initializing the model to focus on local information, then allowing it to expand its focus as it learns. This approach aims to bridge the gap between the sample efficiency of convolutions and the high performance ceiling of transformers. The researchers tested the model on the ImageNet dataset, where it outperformed existing models like DeiT. However, the study is limited by its focus on specific image classification benchmarks.
