The Model Y became the first electric car to top global sales
In 2023 the Tesla Model Y outsold the Toyota Corolla to become the world's best-selling vehicle, the first electric car ever to do so. More than 2.16 million have been sold, making it the most successful electric vehicle so far, and much of its edge comes from quietly clever engineering.
Tesla trademarked the Model Y name in 2013, and Elon Musk teased a version with falcon wing doors in 2015, a feature later dropped. Problems ramping up the Model 3 pushed the unveiling to March 2019, when it was presented as the company's fifth production model. Plans to build it in Nevada were switched to Fremont, California, where production began in January 2020. Factories in Shanghai, Texas and Berlin followed, the German plant delivering from March 2022.
It is essentially a taller Model 3. The two share roughly three quarters of their parts, which Musk says makes scaling production faster and cheaper. A fastback roofline, hatchback tailgate and smooth surfaces give a drag coefficient of 0.23. Buyers choose rear-wheel drive with one motor or all-wheel drive, where a front induction motor can switch off when not needed to save energy. Batteries differ by market: cheaper versions use lithium iron phosphate cells and longer-range ones nickel-based chemistry, with usable capacity of roughly 60 to 81 kWh.
Its heating is a standout. The Model Y was Tesla's first car to use a heat pump instead of plain electric resistance heaters, which can cost an electric car 40 per cent or more of its range below minus 7 degrees Celsius; a heat pump can be up to 300 per cent more efficient. Nissan, BMW, Jaguar and others had used heat pumps first, but Tesla's version drew praise for needing far fewer parts, routing coolant through a Super Manifold and an eight-port Octovalve. Musk ranks it with the new single-piece castings as the key advances over the Model 3.
Sensor choices have been controversial with some owners: radar was dropped from April 2021 builds and ultrasonic sensors from October 2022, leaving driver assistance to cameras alone. In 2024 the Model Y slipped to second behind the Toyota RAV4, and a refreshed version arrived in January 2025, followed by a six-seat long-wheelbase Model Y L.
