Can a V8 engine run entirely on hydrogen?
At SEMA 2024, Yamaha unveiled a groundbreaking prototype: the world’s first hydrogen combustion outboard motor. This video explores the complex engineering required to power a marine vessel using gaseous hydrogen instead of traditional fuels.
The project is a collaborative feat of engineering. While Yamaha is developing the core 5.6L V8 engine, Roush has engineered the fuel delivery architecture, and Regulator has modified a 26-foot hull to house the new powertrain. The system relies on three large tanks holding gaseous hydrogen at 700 bar (10,000 PSI).
To make combustion possible, the setup utilizes a direct-injection method operating at 100 bar. The video investigates the mechanics of hydrogen combustion, the specific functionality of the prototype boat, the potential range for hydrogen-powered marine travel, and the distinct engineering hurdles involved in this transition.
