Can AI surpass the average human in creative thinking?

In short: A massive study involving 100,000 people has revealed a significant shift in the landscape of intelligence. While we often view machines as mere imitators, new evidence suggests that generative AI is beginning to outperform the average human on specific measures of divergent creativity.

In a large-scale study led by Professor Karim Jerbi of the Université de Montréal, researchers compared the creative output of leading large language models—including GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini—against more than 100,000 human participants. The study, published in Scientific Reports, utilized the Divergent Association Task (DAT). This psychological test, developed by study co-author Jay Olson, requires subjects to generate a list of ten words that possess the least amount of semantic connection to one another.

The results indicate a turning point: certain AI systems now exceed average human scores on tasks measuring divergent linguistic creativity. However, this progress comes with a distinct ceiling. While AI can beat the median human, it struggles to match the upper echelons of our species. The research, which included contributions from AI expert Yoshua Bengio, found that the most creative half of the human participants surpassed every AI model tested. The gap becomes even more pronounced among the top 10% of creative individuals, who maintain a clear advantage in complex areas like storytelling and poetry.

Beyond linguistic creativity, the field of machine learning is seeing AI move toward self-sufficiency. A report in Nature by Oh et al. describes an algorithm capable of discovering its own reinforcement learning methods. This represents a departure from traditional development, where human programmers design the learning rules. Instead, these new algorithms can create state-of-the-art learning processes that even function effectively on tasks they have never previously encountered.
