How TikTok’s interest-predicting algorithm bypasses social networks to find virality
In short: Most social platforms rely on who you know to decide what you see. TikTok takes a different path. By using a mathematical approach to predict interest, the app can surface content from anyone, regardless of their real-world status, fundamentally changing how digital fame and community are built.
During his appearance at TED2023 in Vancouver, TikTok CEO Shou Chew explained that the platform's core strength lies in its revolutionary interest-predicting algorithm. Unlike traditional social networks that prioritize connections and existing social circles, TikTok’s system relies on a mathematical model. It analyzes the content that users with similar tastes have enjoyed to suggest new videos, effectively prioritizing interest over social status. This mathematical approach focuses on content consumption patterns rather than a user's established social connections. Consequently, the system identifies what individuals enjoy to drive engagement.
This mechanism allows for a unique form of democratization; any creator can have their videos surfaced to a global audience, irrespective of their real-world standing. However, this rapid virality brings significant responsibility. To manage the scale of content, TikTok employs a dual moderation strategy, utilizing artificial intelligence alongside a dedicated staff of 10,000 human moderators to ensure safety. This approach ensures that creators can achieve massive reach without needing prior fame. This scale of content requires constant oversight to maintain a safe environment.
The platform also faces intense scrutiny regarding data privacy and potential government manipulation. Addressing concerns raised in US congressional testimony, Chew stated that new information on US users is stored on servers within the United States. He acknowledged, however, that the process of deleting older data stored on servers in other locations would continue throughout the remainder of 2023. To combat digital addiction, the app also implements features like gentle suggestions to help users reduce their screen time after a certain period of use. Furthermore, Chew highlighted the company's dedication to fostering inspiration and joy for its global community. He also emphasized the importance of building a healthy relationship between users and the platform.
