Can we save the internal combustion engine by switching to hydrogen fuel?
Toyota is testing a hydrogen-powered combustion engine as a potential alternative to electric vehicles. By modifying existing gasoline technology, the company aims to achieve carbon neutrality while retaining the familiar mechanics of traditional engines.
The project centers on a 1.6L turbo inline three-cylinder engine, originally from the GR Yaris, which was adapted to burn hydrogen instead of gasoline. During testing, this engine was installed in a Toyota Corolla Sport and subjected to the rigors of a 24-hour endurance race. The process works by burning hydrogen and oxygen, which produces water as the primary emission, resulting in nearly negligible harmful output.
Lead engineer Naoaki Ito emphasizes that the core design remains largely unchanged from traditional internal combustion engines. The goal is to leverage existing manufacturing and engineering infrastructure to facilitate the conversion of current vehicles. This approach is positioned as a strategic tool in the broader industry pursuit of carbon neutrality, offering a path to decarbonize transportation without requiring a total transition to electric car platforms.
