How Volkswagen engineered a drift mode into the 2022 Golf R

The 2022 VW Golf R introduces a sophisticated torque-splitting system that replaces the traditional open differential. This video breaks down the engineering behind this upgrade, explaining how it enables true torque vectoring and allows the vehicle to drift.

The 2022 Golf R moves away from the previous Haldex all-wheel-drive system in favor of a new torque splitter. This mechanism enables precise torque vectoring, capable of shifting up to 100% of available rear torque to either the left or right wheel. By independently managing power distribution, the system creates the specific handling characteristics required for Drift Mode.
