Contrary to popular belief, electrical current does not simply vanish into the earth. Instead, it travels through the ground to return to its origin. To understand this movement, one must look back to the source, such as a generator or a transformer, which are essentially simple wire coils.
The fundamental principle of the grid is balance: the amount of current exiting a coil must equal the amount entering it. This returning current can arrive via a neutral line, another phase, or through an electrode embedded in the earth.
