A division built from scratch, destroyed, and rebuilt through the Western Front
In short: Formed in 1943 from a mix of German, Romanian, and Belgian soldiers, the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division underwent a cycle of total destruction and reconstruction. From the hedgerows of Normandy to the defense of the West Wall, its history is a relentless saga of combat and attrition.
The 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division 'Götz von Berlichingen' was established in October 1943 near Poitiers, France. It was constructed from a diverse cadre including Germans, Volksdeutsche, Romanians, and Belgians, with a core provided by the 10th SS Panzer Division Frundsberg. By June 1, 1944, the division was stationed at Thouars, France, struggling with low officer numbers and a lack of tanks, though it was equipped with 42 Sturmgeschütz IV assault guns.
Following the Allied invasion, the division was deployed to Normandy to counter Allied efforts. In mid-June, it engaged the U.S. During the Battle of Graignes, the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions faced the unlawful killing of French civilians and wounded paratroopers. The division's total manpower fell to roughly 8,500 soldiers by July 1944. After being encircled near Roncey during Operation Cobra, the division was split into four smaller combat groups—'Braune', 'Gunter', 'Fick', and 'Wahl'—to escape the Falaise Pocket.
The division's combat cycle continued through the defense of Metz and the Battle of the Moselle. By late 1944, despite being heavily depleted, it was reinforced with Volksdeutsche troops, though these replacements were of a much lower quality than the original personnel. After participating in the ill-fated Operation Nordwind in January 1945, the division faced further attrition. American troops pierced the 'West Wall' by March 18, 1945, compelling the division to desert its vehicles and withdraw to the Rhine. In May 1945, they finally surrendered to U.S. forces by Achen Lake.
