In short: In 1854, a political earthquake destroyed decades of stability. As the Democratic Party collapsed under the weight of new western laws and nativist fervor, a chaotic realignment paved the way for a new era of American politics, ultimately birthing the Republican Party from the ashes of a deadlock.

The 1854–55 United States House of Representatives elections marked the definitive collapse of the Second Party System. While the Democratic Party remained the largest organization, it suffered a staggering net loss of 70 seats in the free states, with as many as one in four Northern Democrats abandoning their party. This exodus was driven by intense controversy surrounding the Kansas-Nebraska Act and rising nativist opposition to Catholic immigration.

The political landscape fractured into several competing factions. New parties emerged in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin, drawing from former Whigs, Free Soilers, and Anti-Nebraska Democrats. Meanwhile, the established Whig Party failed to capitalize on Democratic weakness due to its own internal divisions. In the Northeast, the Know Nothing movement swept Massachusetts and made significant gains in New York and Pennsylvania, forcing Southern Whigs to defect en masse to their ranks by 1855.

This fragmentation resulted in a paralyzed government. When the 34th Congress convened in December 1855, no single party held a majority. For two months, a stalemate persisted because factions of Anti-Nebraska, Know Nothings, and Whigs held 105 to 117 seats, falling just under the 118 votes necessary for choosing a speaker. The stalemate was only broken when rules were suspended, allowing Nathaniel P. Banks to be elected on the 133rd ballot.

The coalition that secured Banks's election became the foundational base for the Republican Party. This realignment fundamentally shifted American politics, establishing the Republicans as the primary opposition to the Democrats heading into the 1856 elections.
