In short: The People's Liberation Army claims its 5.8×42mm ammunition is superior to the NATO 5.56×45mm and Soviet 5.45×39mm. Developed to replace the heavy 7.62×39mm, this intermediate round aims to balance weight, recoil, and lethal precision for the modern soldier.

The development of the 5.8×42mm cartridge was driven by a shift toward lightweight, high-velocity ammunition. Following observations of US M16 performance during the Vietnam War, Chinese officials held the 'Conference 713' in Beijing in March 1971 to establish new infantry weapon criteria. This led to a decade of research, with development officially beginning in 1978 to create a round that offered better accuracy and terminal ballistics than the Soviet 7.62×39mm while reducing recoil.

The standard DBP87 was officially adopted in 1987. To manage costs, the cartridge utilizes a steel case coated in dark brown protective paint rather than traditional brass. While the standard round uses a 4.15-gram bullet, specialized variants like the DBP88 'heavy round' use a 5-gram bullet with a streamlined projectile and steel core to improve performance at extended ranges. This heavy round can penetrate 3 mm steel plates at 1,000 metres.

Evolution continued with the DBP10, introduced in 2010 to consolidate previous variants and optimize performance for newer rifles like the Type 95-1. The DBP10 features a 4.6-gram bullet with a 3.8 mm hardened steel core designed for better body armor penetration. Despite these technical leaps, some testing of earlier 5.8 mm rounds suggested they were less likely to cause serious wounds, a factor that was not addressed in the newer DBP10 design.

As of 2019, the 5.8×42mm family has been succeeded by the DBP191 variant, used in the QBZ-191 service rifle. This ongoing evolution reflects an international trend toward small-caliber, high-velocity rounds that allow soldiers to carry more ammunition without increasing total weight.
