The royal princess who was almost the British bride
In short: In the 1970s, the British press was convinced a marriage between the Prince of Wales and a Catholic princess was imminent. While the public speculated on a fairytale romance, the reality was a complex web of constitutional law, religious restrictions, and a potential intelligence operation.
As the first child of Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium and Jean, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Marie-Astrid of Luxembourg was born in 1954 and counted among the limited number of marriageable princesses from European royalty. Her lineage is deeply rooted in European royalty; she is the niece of King Baudouin and King Albert II of Belgium, and the cousin of the current King Philippe. She was born in Castle Betzdorf in 1954. Her godparents included King Leopold III of Belgium and Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg. She was named to honor the Virgin Mary and her maternal grandmother, Queen Astrid of Sweden.
During the 1970s, she became a focal point of intense media scrutiny. The Daily Express famously claimed in June 1977 that an engagement to Charles, Prince of Wales, was about to be announced. However, the union faced insurmountable legal and religious hurdles. A marriage would have required the repeal or modification of the Act of Settlement 1701, which governed the British succession. Additionally, rumors suggested that Pope Paul VI had intervened to block the match because the couple could not be raised Catholic under the Ne Temere decree.
Interestingly, some historians suggest the persistent rumors might have been a deliberate tactic to identify a leaker within the Privy Council. She obtained a 1977 tropical medicine nursing qualification from the Prince Leopold Institute, choosing a career despite intense media scrutiny. She eventually married her second cousin, Archduke Carl Christian of Austria, on February 6, 1982, solidifying her place in the House of Habsburg. Since 1970, she has held the presidency of the Luxembourg Youth Red Cross. Her husband is the younger son of Archduke Carl Ludwig. She holds several honors, including the Order of the Starry Cross and the Order of Isabella the Catholic.
