How a devastating equine epidemic shaped the fate of the Avar Khaganate
The Avar Wars were a series of brutal conflicts between Francia and the Avar Khaganate from 788 to 803. While Charlemagne sought to expand his realm, a mysterious pestilence that decimated his cavalry forced a strategic pivot, ultimately leading to the collapse of the Avar power structure from within.
The Avar Khaganate, a multiethnic state established in the Pannonian Basin after the Avars arrived in Europe in 558, long served as a formidable power in Central Europe. By the late 8th century, however, the expansionist ambitions of Charlemagne, who had recently subjugated Bavaria and the Lombards, placed the two powers on a collision course. Charlemagne’s biographer, Einhard, described the subsequent war as the greatest of all the conflicts waged by the Frankish king.
The 791 campaign marked a pivotal moment. Charlemagne mobilized a vast coalition of forces, including Saxons, Frisians, and Bavarians, to invade the khaganate. Yet, the campaign was cut short by a catastrophic pestilence that killed approximately 90% of the Frankish horses. Historian Carroll Gillmor suggests this was Eastern equine encephalitis, a mosquito-borne disease. This loss of mobility forced Charlemagne to abandon his offensive, shifting his focus to logistical projects like bridge building while the Avars faced their own internal instability.
The final collapse of the khaganate was accelerated by a civil war, which Duke Eric of Friuli exploited in 795 or 796. He dispatched a mobile unit under the command of a Slav named Woynimir, who successfully captured the khagan’s residence—a fortified circular settlement known as the 'ring'—and seized its immense treasury. In 796, Pippin of Italy led a final invasion that met little resistance, as the khagan chose to submit to Frankish authority. Those who refused this new suzerainty retreated east of the Tisza River, effectively ending the Avar Khaganate as a major political force.
