A lineage of villainy forged in 1480 by a single act of violence
In short: The Zemo barony wasn't born of ancient royalty, but of a desperate defense against a Slavic raid. In 1480, a granary official stood alone in a suit of armor, slaughtering an entire horde. This singular act of violence secured a title that would endure for centuries of blood and betrayal.
The Zemo lineage began in Zeulniz, Germany, in 1480. Harbin Zemo, a ministerialis and granary charge man, was elevated to nobility by the Holy Roman Emperor after he single-handedly defeated an invading horde of Slav raiders. However, the title quickly became a burden; Harbin died of old age in 1503, leaving the barony to his son Hademar.
The family history is defined by internal strife and temporal anomalies. Hademar, described as greedy and weak, was murdered by his 12-year-old son, Heller, who used the help of a time-traveling descendant, Helmut Zemo, to seize power. This established a pattern of succession marked by assassination: Herbert Zemo was killed by his own generals, and Helmuth Zemo was assassinated by a time-displaced Helmut in 1640.
The 12th Baron, Heinrich Zemo, became a prominent Nazi scientist who developed weapons of mass destruction. During World War II, a confrontation with Captain America resulted in Heinrich being permanently bonded to a reddish-pink hood by a chemical called Adhesive X. This physical transformation became his signature, leading him to live as a king in South America, where he enslaved a tribe of natives while searching for a solvent to remove the mask.
The mantle was eventually taken up by his son, Helmut Zemo, who sought to avenge his father's death. Helmut's legacy includes forming the Thunderbolts and the Masters of Evil. The lineage continues through various iterations, including a 14th Baron, Herman Zemo II, and even an alternate reality version where the title was forced upon a brainwashed Howard Stark.
