How a failed Carthaginian expedition to Sardinia secured Rome's vital grain supply in 215 BC
In 215 BC, Carthage attempted to exploit a local Sardinian revolt to weaken Roman power. The resulting Battle of Decimomannu ended in a decisive Roman victory, crushing the rebellion and ensuring that Rome's critical overseas grain supply remained secure while the Punic fleet was pushed back to Africa.
Following the catastrophic Roman defeat at Cannae, Carthage sought to destabilize Roman control over Sardinia. The island, acquired by Rome in 237 BC, was ripe for insurrection due to an understrength legion and a sick praetor. Hampsicora, a local landowner, successfully petitioned Carthage for aid. In response, Carthage dispatched an expedition led by Hasdrubal the Bald, Mago, and Hanno, intended to finance and bolster the uprising.
The expedition faced immediate setbacks. A storm forced the fleet to the Balearic Islands for repairs, granting the Roman praetor Titus Manlius Torquatus time to reinforce his position. By the time the Carthaginian forces landed at Tharros in the fall of 215 BC, Roman strength in Sardinia had risen to 20,000 infantry and 1,200 horse. The two armies eventually met near Decimomannu, engaging in a fierce four-hour battle that remained deadlocked until a Roman wing successfully routed the Sardinian contingent, wheeling inward to collapse the Carthaginian line.
The aftermath was total. Hasdrubal, Mago, and Hanno were captured, while Hampsicora fled and later died by suicide. The Roman victory allowed for the surrender of rebel cities and the return of some Roman forces to Italy. Crucially, the defeat denied Carthage strategic naval bases near the Italian peninsula and protected the grain shipments essential to Roman survival. While the Punic fleet managed to extract some survivors, the failure of the expedition effectively ended Carthage's attempt to challenge Roman dominance in Sardinia.
