The Battle of Lauro in 45 BC served as the grim finale for Gnaeus Pompeius the Younger during the Roman civil war. Following his defeat at Munda, Pompeius fled to the coastal town of Carteia. Internal strife and a Caesarian revolt forced him to evacuate by sea with a fleet of twenty ships. However, a lack of drinking water compelled his forces to land prematurely, where the Caesarian naval commander Gaius Didius intercepted them, burning their ships and effectively trapping them in southern Spain.
Pursued relentlessly by Lucius Caesennius Lento, a wounded Pompeius was carried on a litter as his men sought refuge on a defensible wooded hill. A local informant betrayed their position, leading to a siege. Despite repelling initial assaults, the Pompeians were eventually forced into a desperate breakout attempt. The rough terrain proved fatal for the injured Pompeius, who could not be transported quickly enough. He was eventually cornered in a cave, where he fought to the death after his hiding place was revealed by captives.
The aftermath was marked by a gruesome display of power, as Pompeius' head was sent to Hispalis for public viewing. While Julius Caesar believed the conflict in Spain was resolved, the resistance persisted. Lusitanian survivors of the battle successfully ambushed and killed Gaius Didius near the coast. Furthermore, Pompeius' brother, Sextus Pompey, managed to evade capture entirely. By the time of Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, Sextus had successfully reconquered much of southern Spain, proving that the Pompeian cause was far from extinguished.
