How a royal medical emergency accidentally birthed the First Bulgarian Empire
In 680, the Byzantine Empire seemed poised to crush the invading Bulgars at the Danube Delta. But when Emperor Constantine IV left the front lines to treat a painful gout flare-up, his soldiers mistook his departure for a retreat, triggering a chaotic rout that changed European history forever.
The Battle of Ongal in the summer of 680 was the decisive turning point that established the First Bulgarian Empire. Before this, the Bulgars had been a fragmented people following the death of Khan Kubrat in the 660s. His son Asparuh eventually settled his followers in the Ongal region near the Danube Delta, forming a strategic federation with the Seven Slavic tribes to bolster their defenses against Byzantine encroachment.
Emperor Constantine IV, having recently concluded a peace treaty with the Arabs after their siege of Constantinople, turned his full military might against Asparuh. The Byzantines arrived to find the Bulgars entrenched behind wooden ramparts in a swampy, difficult terrain near Peuce Island. This geography neutralized the Byzantine advantage, forcing them to attack in fragmented, weakened groups. The stalemate lasted four days until the Emperor, suffering from severe gout, departed for Mesembria to seek medical treatment.
The departure proved disastrous. A rumor spread through the Byzantine ranks that the Emperor had fled the field, causing the army to panic and retreat without being pursued. Asparuh’s forces seized the opportunity, launching a devastating counter-attack that decimated the Byzantine troops. Following the victory, the Bulgars pushed south, securing lands near the Stara Planina mountains. By 681, after further military successes in Thrace, Constantine IV was forced to sue for peace.
This victory solidified the Bulgars as a formidable medieval power, eventually rivaling the Byzantine and Frankish Empires throughout the 9th and 10th centuries. The state became a vital cultural and spiritual hub for South Slavic Europe, marking a permanent shift in the regional balance of power that originated from a single, misunderstood medical departure.
