How a secret tunnel and a divine prayer ended Rome's long war with Veii
In 396 BC, the Roman Republic faced a stalemate against the Etruscan city of Veii. To break the deadlock, dictator Marcus Furius Camillus orchestrated a brilliant tactical deception. By combining a massive distraction at the city walls with a covert subterranean strike, Rome finally conquered its powerful neighbor forever.
The siege of Veii was the culmination of a protracted and inconclusive conflict between the Romans and their Etruscan rivals, located just 16 kilometers from Rome. By the time Marcus Furius Camillus was appointed dictator—a role serving as an emergency general rather than a tyrant—the Romans had suffered significant setbacks, including the destruction of their siege equipment by the Veientines. To overcome the city's defenses, the Romans utilized the soft tufa rock beneath the settlement to excavate a secret tunnel.
Camillus executed a sophisticated pincer movement to ensure victory. He launched a full-scale assault on all sides of the city, forcing the defenders to rush to their walls in a state of confusion. While the Veientines were distracted by this sudden frenzy, a picked force of Roman soldiers emerged from the tunnel directly inside the temple of Juno. This maneuver allowed the Romans to overwhelm the city from within, leading to a general massacre before Camillus ordered his men to spare those who surrendered.
The victory was framed by religious ritual, with Camillus invoking Apollo and Juno in a prayer that promised a tenth of the spoils to the gods. However, the triumph carried a dark omen. During a speech regarding the immense wealth captured, Camillus stumbled, an event later interpreted as a portent of his own future condemnation and the eventual sack of Rome following the battle of the Allia. Despite the ominous signs, the fall of Veii was a pivotal moment in history, as the enslavement of survivors and the subsequent repopulation of the city by Romans solidified Rome's growing dominance in central Italy.
