In short: Burhan Wani, a leader of the militant group Hizbul Mujahideen, transformed the Kashmir insurgency into a youth-oriented movement. By leveraging social media to romanticize his cause, he gained immense influence before his death in 2016, which triggered months of violent unrest and a massive, region-wide security crackdown.

Born in 1994 in the Tral region of Jammu and Kashmir, Burhan Wani was the son of a school principal. Though he initially excelled academically, he left home at age 15 to join Hizbul Mujahideen. His family attributed his radicalization to an alleged 2010 encounter where state police beat him and his brother. By 2015, Wani had become a prominent figure, using viral social media content—including photos of armed militants—to recruit young followers and promote his vision of an insurgency against the Indian state.

Wani’s death on 8 July 2016, during a firefight in Bumdoora village, served as a major catalyst for regional instability. While Indian officials stated that security forces were unaware of his presence during the operation, his killing sparked widespread protests across the Kashmir Valley. The resulting unrest led to 53 consecutive days of curfew and resulted in the deaths of more than 96 people, with over 15,000 civilians and 4,000 security personnel sustaining injuries. The intensity of the protests was described as the worst in the region since 2010.

The aftermath of his death saw Wani elevated to an iconic status by supporters and international observers. While Indian leaders criticized the portrayal of Wani as a hero, figures in Pakistan, including former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, publicly mourned him as a leader and martyr. The conflict surrounding his legacy persisted for years, influencing political discourse, media depictions, and even the banning of organizations accused of inciting the post-2016 violence. His life and death remain a complex focal point in the long-standing Kashmir conflict, illustrating the power of digital narratives in modern insurgencies.
