In short: It was three times more expensive than the legendary PBY Catalina and plagued by fuel leaks and stability issues. Yet, this massive, four-engined flying boat carried Admiral Nimitz to Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender, marking the end of the most devastating conflict in human history.

Developed by Consolidated Aircraft starting in 1935, the PB2Y Coronado was intended to be the next generation of US Navy patrol bombers. While its predecessor, the PBY Catalina, was a proven success, the Coronado faced a turbulent birth. The initial XPB2Y-1 prototype, which first flew in December 1937, struggled significantly with directional stability and control. Engineers eventually had to scrap auxiliary fins in favor of an entirely new twin-tail assembly to fix these flight characteristics.

The aircraft's production history was as unstable as its early flight path. Although orders for the type once exceeded 600 units—including 200 intended for Lend-Lease—quality control crises forced a production stoppage. Specifically, leaking fuel tanks in the PB2Y-3 model became so severe that the fleet was temporarily grounded. By the spring of 1943, military planners began favoring land-based aircraft, leading to significant cutbacks in Coronado production orders.

Despite these mechanical flaws and a range of only 1,070 miles—far inferior to the PBY Catalina's 2,520 miles—the Coronado found a vital niche. In the Pacific theater, it became a workhorse for the Naval Air Transport Service (NATS), moving supplies and personnel across vast distances where no airstrips existed. It even served as a medical evacuation craft, capable of carrying up to 25 stretchers. While the era of the great flying boat ended with the rise of the C-54 Skymaster, the Coronado's legacy remains anchored in the pivotal moments of 1945.
