In short: The Mirage 2000D is a masterclass in military evolution. Originally designed as a nuclear strike platform, it was repurposed into a precision tool for conventional warfare, eventually becoming the aircraft that delivered the final blow to Muammar Gaddafi's convoy.

The Mirage 2000N was born from a specific French requirement: a successor to the Mirage IV for strategic nuclear deterrence. Entering service in 1988, it was built with a strengthened airframe for low-level flight and equipped with the Antilope 5 radar, capable of terrain-following at 1,112 km/h (691 mph). Because its primary weapon, the ASMP nuclear missile, occupied the centerline pylon, engineers had to develop a distinctive 2,000-litre underwing drop tank with a bulbous nose to maintain its range. By the early 1990s, delays in the Rafale program necessitated a versatile conventional attack variant. This led to the Mirage 2000D (standing for Diversifie/Multirole). While it shared the same airframe as the nuclear variant, it introduced support for precision weapons like the Apache and Scalp missiles.

This transition from nuclear deterrent to conventional precision strike allowed the aircraft to serve in diverse theaters, from the intervention in Afghanistan in 2001–2002 to the enforcement of the Libyan no-fly-zone in 2011. Operation Unified Protector solidified the historical significance of this plane. During the war's final NATO munitions release on 20 October 2011, a Mirage 2000D hit a Sirte convoy. This strike resulted in the capture and death of Muammar Gaddafi. Since its nuclear-capable siblings are forbidden from export and are being dismantled for parts, the Mirage 2000D remains the primary face of French multirole aviation history.
