A nation of hundreds: navigating the DRC's vast human tapestry
In short: With over 250 distinct ethnic groups and 700 local languages, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the most demographically complex nations on Earth. Yet, for decades, a lack of official census data has left much of this vibrant human mosaic in the shadows.
The DRC's demographic landscape is defined by extreme diversity. The population is composed of over 250 named ethnic groups and 450 tribes belonging to several major linguistic families, including Bantu, Sudanic, Nilotic, Ubangian, and Pygmy. While there is no single dominant group, the Luba, Mongo, and Kongo are among the most numerous. This complexity is mirrored in its linguistics; while over 700 local languages exist, daily life is bridged by French (the official language) and four major intermediary languages: Lingala, Swahili, Tshiluba, and Kikongo ya leta.
Quantifying this population has been a historical challenge. The only census conducted to date occurred in 1984. Subsequent attempts were derailed by periods of instability, including the political reorganization of 1991 and the civil war of 1996. Even when a law was passed in January 2015 requiring a census before elections, it was repealed following protests that resulted in several deaths. This data vacuum makes it difficult to craft precise demographic policies or issue national identity cards.
Current efforts are underway to rectify this. The National Office for Population Identification (ONIP), established in 2011, is leading the second general census. Data collection began on March 2, 2020, but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. With a population estimated at over 105 million as of 2022—placing it as the 14th most populous country globally—the government has allocated significant funding to complete this count by 2025. The stakes are high: accurate data is essential for managing a nation where children under 15 make up nearly half the population.
Beyond numbers, the DRC's social fabric is deeply religious and increasingly global. Christianity is the primary faith, practiced by between 93.7% and 95.8% of the people depending on the study. Meanwhile, the country maintains a significant diaspora; its emigrant population is the second largest in Africa, surpassed only by Nigeria.
