The only illegitimate son Henry VIII ever chose to acknowledge
In short: In a court obsessed with male heirs, Elizabeth Blount became a figure of both scandal and biological triumph. While Henry VIII's other affairs were often short-lived and secret, his relationship with Blount produced the only illegitimate child the King ever officially recognized as his own.
Elizabeth Blount, known as Bessie, was born into a family of significant landed gentry and ancient aristocratic lineage. Her father, Sir John Blount, was a loyal servant to the royal family, and her mother, Katherine Peshall, was the heiress of several manors. The Blounts were deeply embedded in the Tudor court; her grandfather, Sir Thomas Blount, was a prominent figure who served as Steward of the Royal Park and Manor of Bewdley and was a close associate of Henry VII.
Blount entered the royal circle as a maid-of-honour to Katherine of Aragon. A talented dancer and singer, she was noted for her 'high spirits' and 'very good cheer.' By 1513, she was already receiving wages from the King's household. She caught Henry's eye around 1514 or 1515, beginning a relationship that lasted approximately eight years—a notably long duration compared to the King's other mistresses, which were typically brief and unacknowledged.
The defining moment of their relationship occurred on June 15, 1519, when Blount gave birth to Henry FitzRoy. In an era of intense pressure to produce a male heir, FitzRoy was a significant biological milestone. He was the only illegitimate son Henry VIII ever acknowledged, eventually being created Duke of Richmond and Somerset. The success of this pregnancy was so notable that it inspired the popular contemporary saying, 'Bless 'ee, Bessie Blount,' marking her as a unique figure in Tudor history.
Following FitzRoy's birth, the affair ended for unknown reasons. While some historians suggest the child was a 'happy accident' rather than a calculated move for status, Blount's position remained distinct. She transitioned from a courtly performer and mistress to the mother of a recognized royal scion, securing a place in the annals of the Tudor dynasty that few other mistresses achieved.
