The rifle that was too advanced for its own politics
In short: In 1951, the British Army briefly adopted a revolutionary bullpup assault rifle. It featured a compact layout and an optical sight, but it was discarded almost immediately. This wasn't due to a mechanical failure, but a geopolitical tug-of-war over NATO standardization that sidelined innovation for decades.
The EM-2 (also known as the Janson rifle) was born from post-WWII requirements to replace aging bolt-action rifles and submachine guns. Designers sought a 'Light Automatic Gun' capable of high accuracy—a hallmark of British marksmanship tradition—while utilizing an intermediate cartridge. The resulting .280 British round was designed to match the performance of the .303 round at 1,000 yards but at a shorter range of 600 yards. This allowed for fully automatic fire from a rifle-sized weapon, balancing power with controllability.
Technologically, the EM-2 was a pioneer. Its bullpup configuration placed the magazine and chamber behind the trigger, making it about 20% shorter than conventional rifles. Despite this compact size, its barrel was actually 2.5 inches longer than that of the US M14. However, the weapon's fate was sealed by international diplomacy. During 1951 trials at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, a rift opened: the United States argued the British .280 round was too weak, while Britain countered that the American 7.62×51mm NATO round was too powerful for controllable automatic fire.
The conflict reached a stalemate until Winston Churchill's government prioritized NATO standardization over technical superiority. To ensure commonality of ammunition across the alliance, Britain abandoned the EM-2 in favor of the FN FAL, which could be adapted to the more powerful US round. It would take decades for the British position on intermediate cartridges to be vindicated; by the mid-1960s, combat experience in Vietnam led the US to adopt the 5.56mm round, finally confirming that smaller cartridges were indeed superior for full-automatic rifle fire.
