From London It Girl to Guardian of Balkan Heritage
In short: Before she was a powerhouse of contemporary art and marine conservation, Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza was a 1980s London It girl. Today, she uses her vast influence to rescue war-torn history and pioneer ecological art, bridging the gap between aristocratic legacy and modern activism.
Born into the House of Thyssen-Bornemisza, Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza transitioned from a high-profile life as an actress, singer, and model in the 1980s to a serious role in cultural preservation. Her work took a pivotal turn during the 1991–1995 Croatian War of Independence. Based in Dubrovnik, she actively worked to protect Croatia's cultural heritage, documenting damage to museums, libraries, and monasteries while organizing international restoration workshops that brought in experts from the Uffizi and the Getty.
Her commitment to heritage is physically manifested in her long-term lease and restoration of a ruined Renaissance Franciscan monastery on the island of Lopud. Now known as Lopud1483, the venue blends medieval architecture with contemporary commissions and works from the Thyssen collections. This dedication to the past informs her contemporary work through TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, which she founded in 2002. The foundation has commissioned over 1,000 works, often prioritizing large-scale installations that circulate internationally rather than sitting in a single museum.
In recent years, her focus has shifted toward 'ocean science' and environmental justice. In 2011, she co-founded TBA21–Academy, which supports interdisciplinary projects on marine issues. This culminated in 2019 with the inauguration of Ocean Space in a restored church in Venice. Beyond the gallery space, she manages the Alligator Head Foundation in Jamaica, which supports the East Portland Fish Sanctuary through reef restoration and sustainable-livelihood programs. Her trajectory demonstrates a shift from personal notoriety to a systematic use of wealth for cultural and ecological preservation.
