The pediatrician who chose to sacrifice her own life to save her unborn child
In short: Gianna Beretta Molla was a dedicated Italian doctor who faced a harrowing medical dilemma during her final pregnancy. Diagnosed with a uterine fibroma, she rejected procedures that would have ended her child's life. Her decision, rooted in her faith and medical conscience, eventually led to her canonization as a saint.
Born in 1922, Gianna Beretta Molla spent her life balancing a rigorous medical career with deep religious commitment. After earning her medical diploma in 1949, she specialized in pediatrics and opened a practice in Mesero. Her professional life was guided by the teachings of the Catholic Church, and she frequently engaged in charitable work, assisting the elderly and the poor through organizations like Catholic Action.
In 1961, while pregnant with her fourth child, Molla discovered a fibroma on her uterus. Her doctors presented three potential interventions: an abortion, a total removal of the uterus, or a localized surgery to excise only the growth. Prioritizing the survival of her unborn daughter, she opted for the latter. On 21 April 1962, she gave birth to Gianna Emanuela via Caesarean section, but she developed severe septic peritonitis shortly after and passed away on 28 April 1962.
Molla's path to sainthood was marked by two medically unexplained healings, both occurring in Brazil. The first, involving a woman named Lucia Sylvia Cirilo, saw the sudden resolution of a complex rectal-vaginal fistula. The second involved Elizabeth Comparini Arcolino, who experienced a full-term, healthy pregnancy despite a complete loss of amniotic fluid at sixteen weeks. Following these investigations, Pope John Paul II beatified her in 1994, and she was canonized by the Church in 2004. Her husband, Pietro Molla, was the first man to witness his wife's canonization, an event that solidified her legacy as a symbol of maternal sacrifice and Christian virtue.
