In short: The H-class battleship project began as a plan for six powerful vessels to dominate the seas. By the time the design process reached its final, theoretical stage, the ships had ballooned into massive, impractical behemoths that exceeded the physical capacity of any existing German shipyard or harbor.

The H-class program originated in the late 1930s as the centerpiece of Plan Z, a massive naval expansion intended to challenge global maritime powers. The initial H-39 design was conceived as an improved Bismarck-class battleship, featuring 40.6 cm guns and diesel propulsion. Although contracts were awarded and keels for the first two ships were laid in 1939, the outbreak of World War II halted construction. By November 1941, the German navy ordered the existing steel to be scrapped for other wartime needs.

As the war progressed, the design office sought to counter evolving threats. The H-41 design introduced 42 cm guns and reinforced deck armor to withstand heavier aerial bombs. However, the project soon spiraled into purely theoretical exercises. Following Hitler's demand for larger vessels without constraints on size or armament, the New Ships Construction Commission produced the H-42, H-43, and H-44 designs. These later concepts were never intended for immediate production; they were academic studies exploring how to armor a ship against increasingly powerful Allied weaponry.

The scale of these final designs was unprecedented. The H-44, for instance, reached a displacement of 131,000 tons and a length of 345 meters. Such vessels were far too vast to be constructed in traditional slipways, and their immense drafts would have required extensive dredging of German ports. Ultimately, the naval construction office viewed these later proposals as unnecessary and of questionable strategic value, effectively distancing themselves from the increasingly detached and unrealistic planning efforts that continued until the end of the war.
