In short: Before the era of carrier-based aviation, the Royal Navy had to innovate to defend against a new predator: the airship. The Iron Duke-class battleships became the first British capital ships to mount anti-aircraft weaponry, marking a pivotal shift in naval defense as the world moved toward a three-dimensional battlefield.

Launched between 1912 and 1913, the Iron Duke-class was the third generation of British 'super-dreadnoughts.' While they were largely refinements of the King George V-class—retaining ten 13.5-inch guns in five twin turrets—they featured significant upgrades in armor and secondary armament. Notably, they replaced 4-inch guns with more powerful 6-inch weapons to counter modern torpedo boats, a design choice that added roughly 2,000 long tons to their displacement, bringing them to 25,000 long tons.

The class faced immediate technical hurdles. The 6-inch guns were mounted in hull casemates that were initially too low, causing them to take heavy pounding in rough seas. Furthermore, the hinged plates intended to seal these openings were often washed away, leading to severe flooding. These issues required the later addition of dwarf bulkheads and rubber seals. Despite these flaws, the ships were the most advanced in the Royal Navy at the start of World War I, serving as the backbone of the Grand Fleet.

The class's legacy is defined by its role in the Battle of Jutland in 1916. Iron Duke served as the flagship for Admiral John Jellicoe, while Marlborough endured a massive 21-meter torpedo hit that forced her to withdraw. After the war, the ships were largely phased out by the 1930 London Naval Treaty. Iron Duke survived the longest, serving as a training and depot ship until 1946, even surviving Luftwaffe near-misses in 1939 before finally being scrapped.

A unique historical footnote is the class's first foray into anti-aircraft defense. In 1914, Iron Duke was fitted with two 3-inch QF guns specifically to defend against German airships. These manually operated weapons fired high-explosive shells to a maximum ceiling of 23,500 feet, representing the dawn of the era where naval power had to account for threats from the sky.
