The 1745 Jacobite rising was a desperate gamble that ended the Stuart dream forever.
Charles Edward Stuart launched a rebellion to reclaim the British throne, banking on French support and English uprisings. Instead, he found himself leading a largely Scottish force deep into England, only to realize his promises of foreign aid were empty, leading to a catastrophic collapse of trust and military defeat.
The 1745 rising was the final attempt by the exiled House of Stuart to regain the British throne. Formally launched by Charles Edward Stuart at Glenfinnan on 19 August 1745, the rebellion initially saw surprising success, including the capture of Edinburgh and a decisive victory at Prestonpans. However, the movement was built on a foundation of conflicting agendas. While Charles sought to restore absolute monarchy, his Scottish supporters were largely driven by opposition to the 1707 Union and a desire to protect their own interests, rather than loyalty to the Stuart dynasty.
The turning point occurred at Derby on 4 December 1745. Despite marching deep into England, the Jacobite army found no sign of the promised French invasion or the expected mass uprising of English sympathizers. Charles had misled his senior commanders about the extent of his support, and the resulting discovery of his deception shattered the relationship between the Prince and his Scottish advisors. Facing superior government forces under the Duke of Cumberland, the Jacobite leadership voted to retreat, a decision that effectively ended the rebellion's strategic viability.
The final act played out in the Scottish Highlands. After a narrow victory at Falkirk Muir in January 1746, the Jacobite army grew increasingly exhausted and under-resourced. By the time they faced Cumberland at the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746, the rebels were outnumbered and outgunned. The battle lasted less than an hour, resulting in a crushing government victory that effectively destroyed Jacobitism as a significant factor in British politics. Charles escaped to France, but the dream of a Stuart restoration had reached its definitive end.
