John Avlon: From Speechwriting for Mayors to Analyzing the American Political Landscape
In short: John Avlon is a journalist and author whose career spans the corridors of New York City government, the editorial offices of digital media, and the television studios of CNN. Beyond his media roles, he has authored several books examining American political history, leadership, and the challenges of modern partisan polarization.
Born in 1973, John Avlon began his professional life as a speechwriter for New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, eventually serving as the mayor's deputy director of policy. His transition into media included a long tenure at The Daily Beast, where he rose to become editor-in-chief from 2013 to 2018. During this period, he was recognized for his commitment to original reporting. In 2018, he moved to CNN as a senior political analyst, a role that saw him anchoring programs and hosting segments focused on tracking political extremism.
Avlon’s literary work often focuses on the intersection of history and contemporary governance. His 2010 book, Wingnuts, explored the influence of fringe political movements, while his 2021 work, Lincoln and the Fight for Peace, examined Abraham Lincoln’s strategies for national reconciliation following the American Civil War. His interest in historical leadership also extends to George Washington, the subject of his 2017 book regarding the first president's farewell address. These works reflect a consistent focus on the mechanics of political stability and the dangers of ideological division.
In 2024, Avlon stepped away from his media career to seek public office, running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives representing New York's 1st congressional district. After winning his primary election in June 2024, he was defeated in the general election by the incumbent, Nick LaLota. Following this campaign, Avlon returned to media, currently hosting a podcast for The Bulwark. He remains active in public life, serving on the boards of organizations such as the Citizens Union and the Overseas Press Club.
