In short: During Operation Market Garden, a small group of British paratroopers achieved the unthinkable. Led by Major John Frost, they captured and defended a vital Rhine bridge against overwhelming German forces, fighting a desperate, isolated battle that would eventually be immortalized in cinema.

In September 1944, Major John Frost led the 2nd Parachute Battalion into the Battle of Arnhem. His mission was to spearhead the 1st Airborne Division's assault and hold the bridge at Arnhem for two days, allowing the XXX Corps to arrive. Instead, Frost's force of approximately 745 lightly armed men found themselves surrounded and cut off from the rest of the division by the II.SS-Panzerkorps.

The ensuing four-day battle was characterized by intense combat, with German forces utilizing artillery, tanks, and infantry to pressure the paratroopers. Despite the ferocity of the German counterattacks and a lack of mercy shown during the fighting, the British troops refused to surrender. After a brief truce to remove 250 wounded soldiers, the battle continued until the paratroopers' ammunition was exhausted.

By the end of the engagement, only about one hundred paratroopers remained. Frost himself was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Spangenberg castle before being liberated by American troops in March 1945. His leadership during the battle was so significant that he was awarded a bar to his Distinguished Service Order in September 1945. In 1978, the bridge at Arnhem was renamed the John Frostbrug in his honor, a gesture he reportedly felt reluctant toward.

Frost's wartime service also included Operation Biting in 1942, where his command successfully stole a German Würzburg radar component. This operation earned him the Military Cross and the endorsement of Winston Churchill. After retiring from the army in 1968, Frost became a beef cattle farmer in West Sussex.
