In short: To some, Gimli is a short dwarf. To filmmakers, he was a logistical triumph of proportion. John Rhys-Davies' specific physical stature allowed for complex camera movements that would have otherwise required multiple takes, proving that in high-fantasy production, height is often about the math of the lens.

While Gimli is defined by his dwarven stature, John Rhys-Davies stood at 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m). This made him significantly taller than the actors portraying hobbits, who stood at approximately 5 ft 6 in (1.68 m). Because of this specific height differential, Rhys-Davies was considered properly in proportion to the hobbit actors on screen. This physical reality provided a major logistical advantage for the production of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The cinematography benefited immensely from these proportions. Had Rhys-Davies been closer in height to the hobbits, filming scenes involving the entire Fellowship would have required three separate camera passes to capture everyone clearly. Because of his height, the team was able to achieve these shots in only two passes, streamlining a complex and demanding production schedule.

Despite his success as Gimli, Rhys-Davies ultimately ruled out returning for a potential film version of The Hobbit. He cited the punishing nature of the prosthetics, which previously caused his eyes to swell shut during filming. He noted that representing a whole race of 13 dwarves would present even greater technical challenges than the original trilogy's focus on hobbits.

Rhys-Davies' career is marked by diverse roles beyond fantasy, including Sallah in the Indiana Jones franchise and various voice roles for games like Star Citizen and SpongeBob SquarePants. His life has also been shaped by his upbringing in Tanganyika as the son of a colonial police officer, an experience that predates his move to Wales and subsequent acting career.
