From a carpenter's son to a titan of Japanese voice acting
In short: Kappei Yamaguchi didn't start his career by dreaming of anime. After a stint in a high school band, he pivoted to professional training, eventually becoming the definitive voice for some of Japan's most iconic characters. His journey reveals the rigorous craft behind the voices we love.
Kappei Yamaguchi's path to stardom was not a linear progression of fandom. Born in Fukuoka in 1965 to a carpenter father, Yamaguchi's early interest in anime actually lapsed during his high school years when he joined a band. It wasn't until he moved to Tokyo in 1984 to attend the Tokyo Announce University College that he began formal training in a vocational school designed for a wide array of performers, including singers, announcers, and dancers.
His professional foundation was built through theater and rigorous study. He attended acting classes under Kaneta Kimotsuki and joined the 21st Century Fox theater company. Following a year of instruction, his initial theatrical performance was a minor part, though he later portrayed the young detective in So Kitamura's "Odoriko ~THE DANCER MURDER CASE~." Such experience in theatre equipped him with the technical skills needed for his varied work across games, animation, live-action series, and dubbing for international cinema.
Yamaguchi's career is defined by his ability to inhabit distinct archetypes, specializing in lively children and young people. The year 1989 marked his first voice acting job, where he portrayed the male Ranma Saotome in Ranma ½. While he famously failed his initial audition for the lead role of Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece, he pivoted to voicing Usopp, a character he had followed since the manga's serialization began. His range is further evidenced by his dual roles as Shinichi Kudo and Kaito Kid in Case Closed, as well as his work as Kyle Broflovski and Bugs Bunny in international dubs.
Beyond the booth, Yamaguchi has established himself as a business leader and a traditional artist. He is the president of his own entertainment production company, Goku Co. Ltd. He also expanded into the world of rakugo, a traditional Japanese comedic art form, studying under Shirano Tatekawa and performing under the name のゝ乃家ぺぺぺぇ. His influence is so significant that his children, Ryūnosuke and Akane, have also entered the voice acting and rakugo industries.
