In short: From profiling takeover targets to investigating government officials, Kroll has built a reputation for high-stakes intelligence. Often described as a private intelligence agency, the firm employs former agents from the CIA, FBI, Mossad, and MI5 to navigate the murky waters of corporate espionage and forensic accounting.

The Kroll brand began in 1972 when Jules Kroll founded a consultancy to serve corporate purchasing departments. By the 1980s, the firm had pivoted into financial sector investigations, profiling investors and potential takeover targets for major corporations. This specialized focus on intelligence and investigation eventually led to the company being compared to a private intelligence agency, earning the moniker 'CIA of Wall Street.'

This reputation for deep-cover corporate intelligence was bolstered by the firm's recruitment of elite operatives from intelligence agencies including the CIA, FBI, Mossad, and MI5. During the 1990s, the company further diversified its capabilities by expanding into forensic accounting, background screening, and electronic data recovery. It also entered the market for market intelligence and drug testing services.

The firm's reach has occasionally sparked international controversy. In the 1990s, the French intelligence agency Direction de la surveillance du territoire suspected Kroll was being used as a front for CIA activity.

More recently, in 2004, Brazilian authorities raided Kroll's São Paulo offices following accusations of wiretapping and bribing officials during an investigation into Telecom Italia. The modern Kroll is a massive multinational entity, the result of a complex history of mergers and acquisitions. The current firm was formed through the 2018 acquisition of the original Kroll by Duff & Phelps, which subsequently rebranded as Kroll in 2022. This evolution has seen the company expand from its roots in investment research and corporate finance into a powerhouse of risk, governance, and cybersecurity, managing everything from identity theft protection to complex litigation support. The firm's current structure includes specialized units for security engineering and design. It also provides extensive services in identity restoration and fraud solutions.
