The Pennsylvania town that sent the first troops to defend D.C.
In short: When the American Civil War erupted in 1861, the nation scrambled to protect the capital. While many expected the first reinforcements to come from major coastal hubs, a small Pennsylvania borough sent its militia to the front lines first. This local unit holds a distinct place in American military history.
On April 16, 1861, as the Civil War began, the borough of Lewistown mobilized the Logan Guards. Established in 1858, this militia unit represented one of five Pennsylvania-based companies chosen to be the initial U.S. forces tasked with protecting Washington, D.C. soldiers dispatched to safeguard the capital. Today, this legacy is preserved at Monument Square, located at the intersection of Main and Market Streets.
Lewistown's role in national history is tied to its geographic position. Situated near the geographic center of the state, Mifflin County became a vital crossroads in the late 19th century. The region served as a hub for traffic moving in every direction, fueled by the construction of the Pennsylvania Canal and subsequent railroads. This infrastructure allowed the town to expand as a major center for cargo and passenger traffic, even reaching a zenith where it was one of the busiest hubs in the United States.
The town's history is a study in industrial evolution and environmental impact. After the canal system declined, the economy shifted toward manufacturing, including a large American Viscose Corporation plant that produced rayon fiber and polyester. However, the 1972 Hurricane Agnes caused extensive flooding, leading to the permanent closure of many riverfront businesses. While the town faced a period of industrial decline in the late 20th century, it has recently seen a shift toward small business growth and improved connectivity through a new highway system completed in 2020.
The borough was officially incorporated in 1795 and named for William "Bill" Lewis, a Quaker and state legislator who secured its designation as the county seat. This political foundation set the stage for a community that would oscillate between being a primary engine of state commerce and a resilient local center of Pennsylvania life.
