The journalist who died documenting the lingering shadows of the Troubles
In short: Lyra McKee was a rising investigative reporter whose work exposed the human cost of Northern Ireland's past. While she was researching unsolved killings and the social consequences of conflict, she was fatally shot in 2019. Her death sparked a national conversation about the dangers of reporting in volatile regions.
Lyra McKee was a prominent figure in Irish media, recognized by Forbes in 2016 as one of the '30 under 30' for her investigative reporting. Her career was defined by a commitment to exploring the complexities of Northern Ireland's history. She wrote extensively on the 'ceasefire babies'—teenagers whose lives were shaped by the conflict—and was working on a book regarding the 1974 disappearances of Thomas Spence and John Rodgers at the time of her death. On April 18, 2019, McKee was killed in the Creggan area of Derry. She was observing a riot triggered by police raids on dissidents attempting to seize munitions before Easter Rising commemorative parades. While standing near an armored police vehicle on Fanad Drive, she was struck in the head by gunfire from a masked gunman. Police identified the shooter as a likely member of the New IRA, who targeted officers rather than McKee herself. The legal aftermath of her death has been complex. Although a 52-year-old man was charged with her murder in 2020, a 2026 court ruling found three men not guilty of the killing. To date, no one has been charged with the specific act of firing the shot that took her life. Despite the legal hurdles, her legacy persists through a stained-glass window in Belfast and various documentaries exploring the investigation into her death.
