A small town's defiant call to arms against Napoleon
In short: In 1808, a tiny municipality made a massive statement. While the French occupied the Spanish capital, Móstoles issued a public decree declaring the homeland in danger and calling for a general rebellion. This act of defiance transformed a quiet village into a symbol of resistance.
Móstoles' history is marked by a transition from a modest settlement to a significant urban center. While human presence dates back to the Paleolithic era, the town was likely founded between 1085 and 1137, following the Christian conquest of the Kingdom of Toledo. However, because it was not mentioned in the chronicles of the conquest, its early medieval records remain sparse and limited until the late 15th century.
The town's political identity shifted significantly in the 16th century. By the beginning of the 1500s, it was part of the Land of Toledo. Independence from Toledo was granted to Móstoles by Philip II via a royal cédula on 6 December 1565. This decree established the municipality as a 'villa' under 'realengo,' meaning it was owned directly by the monarch rather than a local lord.
The most famous moment in Móstoles' history occurred on May 2, 1808. Immediately following the Dos de Mayo Uprising in Madrid, the municipal authorities issued a public announcement (bando) signed by the Mayor. The decree warned that "Madrid is perishing, victim of the French perfidiousness" and urged Spaniards to rise up. This legacy of resistance is still honored today through a sculpture by Aurelio Carretero and the Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, both inaugurated to commemorate the uprising.
With a population exceeding 200,000, Móstoles currently ranks as the second largest municipality within the Community of Madrid. The area transformed from a farming base—contributing a mere 0.2% to the 2019 GDP—into an industrial and academic centre featuring the Rey Juan Carlos University's primary campus.
