In short: In 2020, a High Court ruling effectively erased Macclesfield Town F.C. from existence. After decades of navigating the highs of league promotion and the lows of financial ruin, the club was wound up, only to be resurrected as a new entity by a local businessman.

The history of Macclesfield Town is a cycle of rebirth. The club's roots trace back to the 8th Cheshire Rifle Volunteers in 1873, eventually merging with the Olympic Cricket club in 1876. Throughout the 20th century, the club faced repeated existential threats. In 1894, a limited company was formed but collapsed within three years due to financial constraints, forcing the club to withdraw from competition until it re-formed later. The club's modern era was defined by a meteoric rise and a subsequent struggle to maintain professional status. Under manager Sammy McIlroy, the club won the Football Conference title twice. In 1994, they were denied promotion to the Football League because their home ground, Moss Rose, failed to meet specific capacity and seating requirements.

They finally secured promotion in 1997, but the transition to professional football proved difficult, leading to a rapid relegation back to the non-league tiers. The final collapse occurred in 2020. Following a points deduction in August 2020, a High Court ruling on September 16 led to the club being wound up and expelled from the National League. However, the story did not end there. Macclesfield F.C. was founded by regional entrepreneur Robert Smethurst, who bought the assets in October 2020 and debuted in the 2021–22 North West Counties Football League season.

This trajectory highlights the precarious nature of lower-league football, where infrastructure requirements and debt can be as decisive as performance on the pitch.
