Is a jailed Palestinian leader the key to reviving the two-state peace process?
In short: Marwan Barghouti has spent over two decades in an Israeli prison, yet he remains a central figure in Palestinian politics. Viewed by many as a potential unifier, he is frequently cited as the only leader capable of bridging deep internal divides and negotiating a lasting peace with Israel.
Born in 1959 in the West Bank village of Kobar, Marwan Barghouti emerged as a prominent student organizer at Birzeit University before rising through the ranks of Fatah. By the late 1990s, he had become a key political figure, winning election to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 1996. During this period, he cultivated strong relationships with Israeli counterparts, signaling a genuine commitment to a two-state solution. However, his trajectory shifted dramatically during the second intifada, a period of intense violence that began in 2000 following Ariel Sharon’s visit to the Temple Mount.
In 2002, Israeli authorities captured Barghouti, accusing him of directing lethal attacks against Israelis through his leadership of the Tanzim and alleged involvement with the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades. He refused to recognize the court's authority during his trial. In 2004, he received a judicial penalty totaling five consecutive life terms plus an additional four decades of incarceration. Despite his imprisonment, he maintains significant influence, consistently polling as the preferred choice for the Palestinian presidency among the public, often outperforming both the current Palestinian Authority leadership and Hamas officials.
Barghouti’s enduring relevance stems from his unique position as a bridge between factions. He has advocated for a political path toward statehood, notably authoring the 2006 Palestinian Prisoners' Document, which secured support across the political spectrum, including from Hamas. Supporters of a renewed peace process argue that his legitimacy, forged through decades of activism and imprisonment, makes him an indispensable partner for any future negotiations. While his release has been proposed multiple times by various stakeholders, he remains a polarizing figure, defined by his history as both a pragmatic politician and a militant leader.
