In short: Imagine spending 166 days in solitary confinement, only to escape and join the front lines of a revolution. Matthew VanDyke’s journey from a motorcycle traveler to a high-profile combatant and founder of a private military training non-profit offers a visceral look at modern asymmetric warfare.

Matthew VanDyke's transition from academic to combatant began with a period of intense exploration. After earning a master's degree in Security Studies from Georgetown University in 2004, VanDyke spent years traveling through North Africa and the Middle East on a motorcycle. These journeys, which included solo trips through countries like Morocco, Mauritania, and Syria, informed his decision to join the 2011 Libyan Civil War as a rebel fighter against Muammar Gaddafi.

His involvement in Libya was marked by extreme hardship. Captured in March 2011, VanDyke was held in solitary confinement for over five months. He endured 85 days in a tiny 1.2m x 2.2m cell in Tripoli, followed by another 81 days in Abu Salim prison. He eventually escaped on August 24, 2011, after prisoners broke his cell lock. Following his escape, he remained in Libya until the regime fell and his fellow prisoners of war were freed, a commitment that earned him comparisons to the International Brigades of the Spanish Civil War.

In the years following, VanDyke shifted from direct combat to organizational leadership. Sons of Liberty International (SOLI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, was established by him during 2014. SOLI provides military training and supplies to forces fighting authoritarian regimes, notably training Assyrian forces against ISIS in Iraq and later supporting the Ukrainian military against Russia. VanDyke remains a polarizing figure, balancing his roles as a combatant, a media personality, and a covert operative, including a 2025 revelation regarding secret operations in Venezuela.
