From a trained pilot to a pioneer of Indian television
In short: Before becoming a staple of Indian cinema, Mukul Dev was a trained pilot who earned his first paycheck as an eighth-grader impersonating Michael Jackson. His journey from a New Delhi upbringing to pioneering English-language television highlights a versatile career spanning decades and multiple languages.
Mukul Dev’s career was marked by a series of firsts and diverse transitions. In 1995, he starred in 'A Mouthful of Sky,' which was the first Indian television series produced in English, airing on DD National. This early work laid the foundation for a prolific career in television, where he appeared in major serials like 'Kahin Diyaa Jale Kahin Jiyaa' (2001) and 'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii' (2003), as well as hosting high-octane reality shows like 'Fear Factor India' Season 1.
His entry into the film industry was also notable. After being spotted by Amitabh Bachchan's company ABCL, he made his cinematic debut in 1996 in 'Dastak.' While he was initially cast in a project titled 'Naam Kya Hai' that was eventually shelved, his subsequent filmography included roles in major productions like 'Qila' (1998) and 'Jai Ho' (2014). He was also known for his linguistic and cultural range, appearing in films across Punjabi, Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu.
Dev's background was as varied as his filmography. Born into a Punjabi family with roots near Jalandhar, he was exposed to Afghan culture through his father, Hari Dev, who spoke Pashto and Persian. Despite his success in the arts, Dev also held formal training as a pilot from the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi. He passed away in May 2025 at the age of 54, leaving behind a legacy that bridged traditional Indian storytelling with modern television production.
