In short: Born from the British Empire’s colonial units, the Nigerian Armed Forces have transformed into a major African military force. From civil war combat to international peacekeeping missions, the military remains central to Nigerian statehood, despite enduring domestic challenges, internal corruption, and the complex legacy of its historical political influence.

The Nigerian Armed Forces trace their origins to the Royal West African Frontier Force, a colonial field force. By 1956, the Nigeria Regiment was renamed the Nigerian Military Forces, and in 1958, control shifted from the British War Office to the colonial government. Upon independence in 1960, these units formed the foundation of the new national military. The force expanded dramatically during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), growing from 85,000 personnel to over 250,000, before contracting to approximately 125,000 in the post-war years.

Throughout its history, the military has played a significant role in both domestic governance and regional stability. It seized power in 1966 and 1983, and the rapid expansion during the civil war entrenched the military's influence within Nigerian society. By 1999, President Olusegun Obasanjo noted a decline in military professionalism, a concern often linked to the impact of corruption on operational readiness. Today, the military faces ongoing security threats, including the conflict with Boko Haram in the northeast and anti-piracy operations in the Niger Delta, which are critical given that petroleum accounts for 90% of Nigeria's exports.

Despite these hurdles, Nigeria has maintained a unique capacity for foreign intervention, often referred to as Pax Nigeriana. The military served as the backbone of ECOMOG in Liberia and Sierra Leone during the 1990s and has contributed over 20,000 troops to various United Nations missions since 1960. Modernization efforts are currently underway to improve discipline and firepower, involving the acquisition of new combat aircraft, armored vehicles, and drones. These initiatives aim to restore the military's effectiveness in defending the nation's territorial integrity and supporting regional stability across West Africa.
