In short: By early 1943, Japan’s position on Guadalcanal had become untenable due to starvation and disease. In a masterclass of military deception, Japanese commanders executed Operation Ke, a daring nighttime withdrawal that successfully evacuated over 10,000 troops from under the noses of Allied forces who were expecting a new offensive.

By December 1942, the Guadalcanal campaign had become a strategic catastrophe for the Japanese Empire. What began as a mission to capture Henderson Field had devolved into a desperate struggle for survival. Japanese forces on the island had dwindled from 36,000 to 11,000, with daily losses mounting due to malnutrition and disease. Recognizing that the campaign was a lost cause, the Imperial General Headquarters, with the formal endorsement of Emperor Hirohito on 31 December 1942, decided to abandon the island to prioritize the defense of New Guinea.

The evacuation, dubbed Operation Ke, was a feat of tactical misdirection. While the Japanese military outwardly maintained a posture of aggression, they secretly prepared to pull their 17th Army off the island. To mask their true intentions, they changed radio codes and conducted diversionary maneuvers near the Marshall Islands and New Guinea. Allied intelligence, misled by these efforts, concluded that the Japanese were actually preparing for a major new offensive. This misinterpretation kept Allied forces cautious, inadvertently creating the space needed for the Japanese to execute their withdrawal.

The evacuation itself was carried out in three nighttime runs by destroyers on 1, 4, and 7 February 1943. Rear Admiral Shintaro Hashimoto led the Reinforcement Unit, which successfully extracted 10,652 men. The operation was not without cost; 600 soldiers died during the evacuation, and 3,000 required extensive medical care. Despite the loss of one destroyer and damage to three others, the Japanese achieved their objective. On 9 February, Allied forces finally realized the island was empty and declared Guadalcanal secure, marking the end of the grueling six-month campaign.
