The 'Angels in Brown Berets' who treated 20,000 wounded in Korea
In short: While India chose not to join the Korean War militarily, they sent a specialized medical unit that became legendary. Known as the 'Angels in Brown Berets,' this parachute field ambulance provided critical care to UN forces, the ROK Army, and civilians, earning international acclaim for their bravery under fire.
The 60th Parachute Field Ambulance (60th PFA) served in Korea for four years starting in 1950. Though India remained militarily neutral, the 60th PFA provided medical cover for the UN Command, the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army, and local civilians. The unit was particularly noted for treating approximately 20,000 wounded soldiers and civilians between November 1950 and February 1954, even providing care for North Korean prisoners of war.
The unit's most significant contribution occurred during Operation Tomahawk on March 21, 1951. Medical care was supplied by them to the United States. The 187 Airborne Regimental Combat Team of the Army. Due to such remarkable conduct, the group earned two Maha Vir Chakras, a Vir Chakra with one bar, plus six Vir Chakras, plus commendations from the South Korean and US Army leaders. The British Parliament's House of Lords even acknowledged their contribution.
Distinctive awards have solidified the 60th PFA's heritage. In March 1955, they were awarded the President's Trophy by India's first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad—the first and only time such a trophy was awarded. Furthermore, the American Parachutist Badge was bestowed upon 12 personnel from the unit involved in the airborne jump. Today, the unit continues its legacy as the 60th Parachute Field Hospital.
This medical excellence is rooted in the history of the Parachute Regiment, which was re-raised in 1952. The regiment's airborne identity was forged in the crucible of World War II, specifically during the grueling Battle of Sangshak in 1944. There, the 50th Parachute Brigade suffered heavy casualties while preventing Japanese forces from surrounding the Imphal plain, establishing the high-stakes operational standard the 60th PFA would later uphold in Korea.
